Matt Martin, webmaster for
Nashvillehardmusic.com, is a certifiable nut. He’s loony as all get out,
and he has a vicious obsession with poo and midgets. But he just maybe a
genius in idiot’s clothing. He founded NHM
in December of 2000, and with
the help of the ever-so-beautiful Susan, his creation has since turned into
the premiere source of daily news covering the Nashville music scene on the
web today. Boasting an average of close to 500 visitors a week, Martin is
helping give the local bands in Nashville the exposure that they so richly
deserve.
"I got bored one day and decided to start a website. Since you can’t make
porn sites on those free servers, local rock was the next option," Matt
wrote me in his email. (Editor’s note: thank God for boredom, although I
personally think the web could use a few more good porn sites). The bands
themselves supply the majority of the news that goes on
NHM, although
occasionally Matt will email a particular band requesting show dates and
such. Interviews, CD reviews, show reviews, contests...the list of
information that appears on NHM
goes on and on. And plans are in the works
for a few other sections: "I would like to put nude pictures of the bands
in a special section and people would have to send me their credit card
numbers before they could see it." HAHA! That’s funny as hell. Needless
to say, Tom Green and Johnny Knoxville are two of Matt’s biggest idols.
His interesting way of looking at things adds a touch of the humorous to
NHM, although there’s more to Matt than just poo and HTML.
"I want to let people know that we have more in Nashville than just country
and football. I think Nashville could be the next Seattle. I hope that
people see a band from Nashville and give them respect just because they
are from Nashville," Matt replied when I asked him what he hopes to
accomplish with his site. And he added: "I also hope to raise awareness
that I am single and lonely, and want someone I can discuss HTML and
Javascript over a warm fire with." I guess when you’re Matt you can be
serious for only so long. "We are just all about supporting the local scene
and getting these bands the exposure." His final words: "Watch out for a
band featuring yours truly very soon. We will rule your mama’s mama.
Wurd!" With people as dedicated to the music scene as Matt and the rest of
the bunch at NHM, there’s no telling how far the Nashville music scene will
go.
Nashvillehardmusic.com...go there. Now. Bookmark it. Embrace the poo,
and indulge in your love for music. Support the local music and the
websites that do as well. Don’t be afraid to go out and get involved in
your scene. With websites like NHM
and Polluteme.com feeding you plenty
of show dates and information about the bands, you don’t have a good reason
not to. And if you happen to run into Matt or Susan at a show, be sure
and tell them that their hard work is definitely appreciated. Without
people like them, the world would be a very boring place to live indeed.
