Without a doubt one of the most amazing bands to come out of Nashville in a long time is the five-man band called Shun. Their emotionally charged music has made numerous fans both near and far. By creating music that makes you stand up and pay attention to the details rather than mosh till your body is broke, the quintet of musicians are fast making a reputation for themselves all across America. Vocalist Billy White, guitarists Cris Hawkins and David Crutcher, bassist Richie Glover and drummer Jac Glenn - along with fellow band Spiritfall - are coming off of a personally-funded month-long tour dubbed the "All Under Heaven" tour in support of their recently released EP "Michael In Reign". Starting in their hometown of Nashville and heading west, they hit stops in Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, California and Indiana along the way. They recently took the time out from their busy schedule to answer some questions that I emailed to them upon their return.
What were some of your personal highlights of the "All Under Heaven" tour? SHUN: Well for us just being able to do it ...it is a pretty hard thing to do book, fund and play a tour that stretched from Tennessee to California and back. Doing that without any label support or any funding besides your own is pretty amazing. But besides that it was an experience that none of us will ever forget. We learned a lot about what our future will be made of and we all got to see some amazing things and play with some great bands.
How well was your music received during the tour?
Of all the shows we played we did not get any bad responses. As far as that goes I don't think we ever really have.
What was your favorite place to play?
I really enjoyed Cambell, California. It was an awesome venue and the crowd was great. But I have to say that by far the best was the Nashville show with our hometown crowd.
I always feel great when we play at home.
Were there any bands that you got to play with that were particularly impressive?
Well we did the whole tour with Spiritfall who are an awesome band and awesome people, and we played with a band called Downside who where equally as good.
We also played with Shortie and Further who are both really good.
What kind of preparation did you have to do in order to get ready for the tour?
First we had book the tour. Then after we knew it was gonna happen we had to save money for ourselves. Then buy a new van, make sure our equipment was in okay condition, and be prepared to come back extremely broke.
After experiencing the California music scene first-hand, what words of advice do you have for Lowboy?
We played in a few places in California and from what we experienced there the scene isn't any better, there is just more interest in music besides country. That gives a band like Lowboy a better chance and we all in Shun wish them the best of luck.
Last question...Is there any chance of another tour in the near future?
We are already in the process of booking the next two tours. A short sprint is expected in June and July and then a month-long tour throughout August. Besides that we have pretty much every weekend booked through September.
