Interview w\ Reson8 written by: Jacob Robison There have been a lot of changes in the Reflex camp recently. First of all it's not the Reflex camp anymore; the four-man band from Montgomery County, Tennessee changed their name from Reflex to Reson8 (signifying a whole new change in their sound). Secondly Brett Marbes made the switch from guitarist back to drummer (Brett started his musical odyssey behind the drum kit). Lastly the foursome dropped the vast majority of their original songs in search of a new musical direction; after going down to their practice place and catching one of their practices, I'd say they have achieved what they went in search of. Vocalist Clint Elliot (who wasn't present due to going to a Disturbed/Mudvayne concert in Nashville), guitarist Adam Elliot, bassist Brad McWhorter and drummer Brett Marbes have successfully created a unique sound full of guitar effects, smooth bass lines and impressive drum beats (almost a lounge/stoner/alternative sound). The three musicians ran through their songs a couple of times (by interview time they only had five songs fully wrote), and then took the time to sit down for an interview. ![]() The first question is...what prompted the name change from Reflex to Reson 8, and how did you come up with the new name? AE: Well, let's see. We had to get a new name, because it just wasn't Reflex without Jerles. BM: That's old. AE: That's really old. We had to use it when we played at The Warehouse. We had a deadline... BM: The fuckers kinda forced us. Not really but. AE: We had a deadline to think of one and we didn't make the deadline. It's hard to think of a name. BM: I think it started out coming up with Reson 8 when we like...we're sitting one day, just you know... BMc: Talking about Reson Rosin. BM: Yeah, Reson Rosin. And I think he (pointing to Adam) thought of, because we play pool a lot. Shoot pool and shit. So the eight ball, I don't know. AE: That's how our logo came. BM: No wait. We did use Reson 8 at The Warehouse show, didn't we? BMc: Yes we did. AE: Because right before the show me and Clint went and got a battery and I thought of putting the 8 on the end of it. He was saying, let's do Reson Rosin. Let's do Reson Rosin. BM: Yeah, hehe. Speaking of the show at The Warehouse...I was there to hear some of your new material. Describe some of the differences between the new stuff and your older material? BM: Calmer. More mellow. More flow. Not bragging, but especially with me on the drums. I like to keep the beat real. AE: It's more smoking music. BMc: But he ain't bragging or nothing though. BM: I just like to keep the beat real. Will you be redoing any of the old stuff? BMc: Mask. That's about it. AE: We rebuilt Mask. BM: More structure, better form. How much longer will it be before you start playing out again? AE: As soon as we get a few more songs and some organization. BM: Mad organization. Speaking of organization...where's Clint? BM: Organization...Clint needs to recognize. AE: He's partying like the rock star he's not. Everyone: Hahaha! I noticed that you use a shitload of effects when you're playing. What kind of equipment do you use to produce them, and how long did it take you to get good at it? AE: I use a Boss G-5 for my pedal effects, and it took a while to save up for that. I did have a Digitech but it broke. And I got a Crate stack. Do you like the one guitar better or the two? AE: One. A whole lot better. BM: I do too, but I think there's a few things missing. Just every once in awhile, you know. There could be a catchy rhythm guitar in there. How has Brett's move from playing the guitar to sitting behind the drum-kit affected the band's music? BM: None, I don't think. AE: I don't know man. That's how we changed our style. We didn't play much different when we had Steven. BM: Yeah. AE: When we practiced with him all two times we saw him. BMc: Was it two times? AE: Yeah. BM: No, it was once. Because he brought his electric drums which were bad as fuck. I'm going to get me a set one day. BMc: No, because he brought his cheap shit and left them. BM: Oh yeah. It was twice. That's right. AE: I don't know...it has changed. Like he said earlier, it's more mellow, but he likes to "keep it real" on the drums. BMc: It's a little tighter with four people too. AE + BM: Yeah. BM: Me and Adam, we've been playing like jamming in practice, like separately because Jerles would never be there. I'd play his drums anyway, even though they hated me to and he didn't want me to anyway. Just practice more to get together, more just getting everyone to know each other's position better. AE: Me and him have playing with each other for years, so we know how each other thinks. Do you like the drums better than the guitar? BM: Oh hell yeah. I've played the drums for awhile, I just kinda slacked off for awhile because my parents wouldn't get me a drum set, so the guitar's cheaper. A huge part of the Clarksville music scene is leaving with the departure of Lowboy. Who do you see stepping up and trying to fill their shoes? BMc: Ohh... AE: FSN. BM: Definitely FSN. AE: I think they're fixing to starting playing The Warehouse regularly, aren't they? BM: We'd be playing there too if we had some organization. What would it take for that organization to take place? What would have to take place to force that? BM: I can't answer that on tape. AE: It would take everybody at practice on time; that way we'd get discipline. BM: Like it's a job. BMc: Not like it's a job man. You've gotta have fun. BM: I don't mean like a job in the way of "Boy, you'd better be here or you're fired!". BMc: Act like it's your future motherfucker. BM: yeah, exactly. I can't even say why Clint, but the fact that I think he'd rather be doing something else than being with the band. I mean, that's my personal opinion. He don't write as much as he used to. AE: I think he just needs to get his priorities straight. BM: I know he feels like he's out of the house and can do whatever he wants, but there's things that need time, and there's shit to really get down to. Get down to business. Especially if you claim you're really serious. Okay, for a total change of pace...are there any plans in the works for a few more Rotary Park shows this summer? BMc: Oh man that would be awesome. I'd love to. BM: I've talked to some people about it. AE: You should get some bands together. I'm pretty sure you know more bands than we do. I know a shitload of bands. BMc: Get...um, who is it? Kon 'shens? Man, they're bad. AE: We'll put the show together, take responsibility. Just like last time. BM: Yeah, that'd be tight. I'd like to have one again. Well the last couple of questions I have were for Clint, but he's not here. Is there anything that you would like to add? BM: Clint needs to be here. AE: I think it's really fun to play in a band. It's something to do, and you spend time and work at it to make it. That's the whole point of being in a band is to try and make it. That's the whole talent. And when you do it, it makes you king of the hill. BMc: No matter what, play forever though. |
