Flood Interview
written by: Rob of cab over pete

Forming in 1996, flood, consisting of Jason P. (drums), Mark S. (vocals), Chase S. (guitar), and Recco (bass), play a heavy yet progressive style of music here in the southeast. Known equally well in Clarksville, Murfreesboro, and Nashville, they are one of the areas heavy hitters, while their fan base is still continually growing. Flood, impressively, combines a raw feel with a polished sound. Rough, powerful vocals on top of groove based rhythm, along with insightful stops and breaks. Their live performance is just as penetrating, if not more so. cab over pete was lucky enough to play with them on a few occasions, first at the angle of view, bongo johnny's, and the past stomp club III. Mark was kind enough to answer some of our questions via e-mail recently.....
Flood

First, some musical queries. when is a new flood cd coming out?
We're hopefully going into the studio January or Febuary, so a new release should be out next summer.

What music do you have available right now?
Our first cd (bullet) is sold out and we have another cd out (tripwire) which is available through us. We have a brand new song coming out on a compilation through a contest we won which will have nationwide distribution so we're stoked about that. We have two songs on the "unsigned aggression" compilation and we're on several mp3 style sites which you can get to through our website.

Individually, how long have the members played their instruments?
Jason and myself have been playing instruments about 12 years, Chase and Recco I'm not sure.

When are the next few flood shows?
Cincinnati, Nov. 9th; Memphis, Nov. 16th; Cadiz, Nov. 24th

What town do you enjoy playing the most?
Probably our hometown of Clarksville. It sucks to live here but we have a good following so our shows here are insane. St. Louis is awesome also.

I enjoy your music in part because it is hard to narrow you down to one musical influence. Have you found that not being easily catagorized has helped or hindered you with the kids out there?
I think its helped, people don't know what to call us, I guess if we followed trends more we might have better acceptance but that's not us. We play from the heart and the gut, we don't care about anything else.

Having been around since 96', you've seen the mainstream death of grunge, punk, electronic, and rap metal....what advice do you give a band starting out now on how to stay as fresh as you guys after five years.
When we started out the whole rap metal thing was getting popular and we could have easily jumped on that but we stuck to what we were doing. whatever style of music you play make it yours, eventually people see through imitation.

Do you think there is a problem with the scene? If so, do you think it lays with bands or the fans? 16,000 people will go to ozzfest, yet how many to local shows? I'll take you guys over godsmack any day.
I don't know what the deal is out here, there are so many good bands out there shows should be packed out.

I believe your song "set in stone" has an anti-drug message. does flood sing about social issues such as drug abuse, etc...?
I write lyrics that pretty much anyone can relate to, social, personal, whatever is on my mind. 'set in stone' is about drug abuse but i knew it was a subject that has been covered many times so i put my spin on it which instead of asking someone "why?", or "you need help" its more like you did it to yourself, your excuses don't fly, now get the hell out of my life.
