Fall With Me Interview

fall with me...
It is really hard to quantify the music of fall with me. To describe
them is simply tough, to label them something is impossible. I have heard
them called everything from hard-emocore to ghost metal, but nothing that
actually fits. So i will quote andrew lloyd weber and apply it to the band-
"hard as thunder, soft as candlelight." while somewhat vague, it is a more
accurate representation of the group, as they go between walls of layered
sound and fury, to barely a whisper, and then back again.
fall with me formed in 1998, here in nashville. consisting of Dave
(guitar), Brandon (guitar), Nick (vocals), Rick (bass), and Jonas (drums),
they began to experiment freely with energetically hard music. Proceeding
well from the start, the quintet hit a snag a year later with the departure
of jonas. Replacing him was brad, formally of lovebucket, who in turn added
an even more exceptional dynamic to the band as they began anew.
To this date they have one album available, aptly called "the first days
of forever." The live show is what one needs to see in order to fully
appreciate the band, however. cab over pete has performed many, many shows
with f.w.m., as we are big fans ourselves. Dave, Nick, and Brad recently
answered our querries.
When will there be a new fall with me album?
We are planning to have it completed early 2002. it will be released on spat
records.
When are some upcoming shows?
We will be playing at the end on december 8th with cab over pete, abraid,
and dharmakaya. We will be headlining this show. it will be put on by spat
records. We will also be playing at faces in murfreesboro on december 15th.
without and one other band will be playing as well. It should be a fun show.
fall with me recorded "delusional," a cover song originally performed by the
now defunct, yet awesome quicksand, for a tribute album. When will that be
coming out?
I would like to know myself. Our friends piston honda know but it is a
secret.
how did that come about?
Piston Honda is putting it together and they asked us to be a part of it. we
recorded delusional for it almost a year ago. Bands like biohazard, piston
honda, strife, god forbid, and a bunch of others will be on it.
Speaking of national acts, who would be a great band for fall with me to
open up for on a tour?
If i was a fly on the wall of your rehearsal space, what would i see during
the creative process of the new album? Is there a lot of fighting? Is it
democratic? It seems the members have extremely varying tastes.
Okay, you would see mass chaos. This is hard to say, (you would see a bunch
of flags, darth maul, and x-mas lights) you would see a lot of frustration,
a lot of picking things apart. We generally record everything in the
practice room before we go to the studio. Then we pick it apart and make
sure that everything is exactly how we like it. We are not democratic. If
one person does not like it, it shall be slain. There is not really
fighting, we really overanalyze everything we do because we want it to be
the best we can do.
I've told you before about how your first album does not do your live show
justice. The dynamic doesn't seem to be apparent enough. Have you done
anything differently on this album? sonically? mastering?
We are using a different engineer this record. His name is Joe Funderburke
and he just recorded tomahawk.( ex members of jesus lizard, faith no more,
helmet, melvins) we are experimenting with the use of different vocal mics
and micing techniques. We are also using a new drum kit.
Where is the new album headed, musically?
It is heavier and more desperate, closer to our live show.
Do you have any suggestions or complaints about the scene in nashville? More
people should really check you guys out, that is for sure.
we plead the 5th on this one.
The name fall with me came from one of nick's lyrics in a previous band. Is
there something behind it? What was the context of the line from which it
came?
The name came from a staring at the sun song called 'privity.' The song was
about my ex-girlfriend. I had a feeling what she was doing to me and I wrote
a song about it. In the chorus were the words "fall with me" because I
wanted her to hit as hard as I did when i found out the whole story. now,
the name can mean anything you want it to..it has many connotations.
I see a lot of fists in the air at fwm shows. Is this a political stance?
What does fall with me sing about?
No, the fists are thrown up because i guess at that moment we feel
empowered. Our songs are really about struggle for the most part. We have
songs that are aimed at individuals. We have been experimenting with words
that are about the murder of my uncle [nick's uncle] many years ago. There
are several songs about that and about my exploration into that whole
fiasco.
