The level of symbiotic energy exchanged between performers and their fans
is oftentimes one of the best gauges for the success of any given show. At an
Asbestos show, however, audiences are not given this option. Consistently attaining
a maximum of passion in every performance, this Nashville-based hard rock band
brings a raw, explosive energy to their music that leaves even the most high-wired
audiences feeling like they just can't keep up. As relative newcomers to a well-worn
and difficult industry, this young, driven and ever-evolving raucous collective
refuses to settle for the oblivion of a benign "mainstream," and instead sets
themselves apart from the masses by continually exceeding what is already a mach
speed high-energy rock show.
Through a wealth of artistic and individual diversity, Asbestos has succeeded in producing a brand of rock music that is captivating and unique, but is still a sound that is easily recognizable, blending elements of rock, metal, alternative, and pop. However, the road to finding the right lineup for the band hasn't been easy. Forming in Independence, Missouri in 1993, Asbestos began as four great friends who started a high school band. But after a 1994 graduation and a homemade CD, the band went their separate ways, reuniting the next two summers to play a handful of shows. It was Mark Dunham's move to Nashville the next fall of 1995 that would set in motion the changes Asbestos would undergo the next four years. After adding a new guitar player and drummer, two original members trickled to Nashville to rejoin the band. After a few months, those two members parted, leaving the band a broken entity once again. Mark, determined to keep the band together, put his bass down and ! decided to step up and take on the responsibility of lead vocalist and front man. All this led to the early 1999 release of "Crazy? Insane?," a full length album introducing the new dynamic of Asbestos with the multi-faceted Jeremy Pennebaker on guitar and Carter Hassebroek on bass. With newest addition Kevin Peppos on drums, Asbestos now has the lineup that is dedicated to making their mark in the hard rock world, trying to avoid the mainstream focus on "image" and rather focusing their attention on establishing themselves through their music and performances. They are a band that is driven to succeed by their songs, live show, and the positive attitude that underbellies their existence. Any way you look at it, Asbestos' music and live shows are meant to be experienced more than merely enjoyed. It is a band whose intensity and work ethic can only be rivaled by the fervor of its fans, and even that pertains only to those fans that may, in the end, still have the strength to remain standing. |
