Mike Orth and Brain Stanley formed what would become Against The Grain in
Nashville in 1995. The sound started as alternative but has obviously evolved to a
heavier sound as the group has developed. Their first gig together was a talent show
at McMurry School on May 21, 1996 playing a Nirvana cover of "Breed." Mike and Brian
continued playing together with other drummers practicing covers and orignals like
"Netherlands" and "Break Me."
In 1998 Todd Schlosser was found at a party where he and Brian played "Master Puppets." Todd had only been playing drums a short time, but the three of them began to form their own style. The next step was to find a singer. In a desperate search for a singer, ATG finally cast Cole Simmons as a temp lead man. A few gigs were played until Cole was asked to leave the band. For the next 6 months ATG tried frantically to find a front man. Finally, in 2000, Mike saw potential in a 15 year old in choir with him. Chris Foust came to a practice and sang "Fuel" by Metallica. Impressing the band, they asked him to try & put lyrics to a new song; thus, the first performance of "Paralyzed." Now with their new line up, ATG began playing for audiences around town. |
